In response to the NSFW ban being enacted by Tumblr Staff, on December 17th 2018 I propose that we all log off of our Tumblr accounts for 24 hours.

The lack of respect and communication between staff and users is stark. Users have been begging staff to delete the porn bot outbreak, which has plagued the website for well over a year. The porn bots oftentimes send people asks and messages, trying to get them to go to a website full of viruses. They also spam advertisements on others posts.

Users have also begged that Tumblr ban neo-nazis, child porn, and pedophiles, all which run rampant on the site. The site/app got so bad that it was taken off the app store.

However, instead of answering the users, Tumblr has instead taken the liberty to ban all NSFW content, regardless of age. But users have already run into issues of their SFW content being marked as sensitive and being flagged as NSFW, not allowing them to share their work.

Not only does this discriminate again content creators, but it also discriminates against sex workers. Disgustingly, the ban will be enacted on December 17 which is also International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.

This ban is disgusting, and while I (and plenty of others) welcome porn bots and child porn being banned, the Tumblr filtration system is broken. It tags artistic work’s nipples as NSFW (when it is art), it tags SFW art as NSFW (when it is not), and does not stop the porn bots, neo-nazis and dozens of other issues.

This ban is discriminatory. This ban is ineffective. This ban is unacceptable.

To protest, log off of your Tumblr account for the entirety of November 17th. Log off at 12 am EST or 9PM PST and stay off for 24 hours. Don’t post. Don’t log on. Don’t even visit the website. Don’t give them that sweet ad revenue.

Tumblr’s stock has already taken a hard hit. Let’s make it tank. Maybe then they will listen to the users.

Reblog to signal boost! We must force change.

Logging off now, later, folks.

I’m pretty sure logging out does nothing more than deleting a cookie from your computer. It’s not likely that tumblr is even able to detect that. But who knows? Maybe a sudden drop in user activity will be noticeable?

Anyway, here’s where it’s located.

For everyone on this post asking which villains I’m talking about/what kind: this post was written especially about the all villains that you particularly hate, and it was written to spite you, personally.

Additionally…

Writers: *didn’t write the villain as obviously sympathetic, but gave them a couple of experiences and powerful emotions that some people share and thus relate to, while making the hero too perfect and sweet to necessarily be relatable to those people*

People: *write AUs and the like to explore their own more sympathetic version of the villain and potential redemptions*

Relating to that last anon about oranges, if there was a way to get only one ovary (I don’t remember the proper word) fertilized, what would happen? Nothing? A single orange slice? An orange with no slices? Love your blog btw

yes!! this but this is called ‘incomplete pollination’ and i cant find any pics of it in oranges but it is a thing that happens, especially in places with fewer bees and pollinators (like the pollen just…doesnt quite get there). this honey bee website has a few examples:

pears (right one is missing a couple):

cucumbers:

tomatoes (notice that the right side is producing the correct hormone to make it ripen, but the left isnt, because….its empty….theres nothing there….):

this is apparently what it looks like in watermelons, where the lack of tissue development causes it to split on the inside:

strawberries:

raspberries (healthy fruit at far left, middle and right are incompletely pollinated):

image

the plants just….dont really know what to do and Do That instead, and wonkiness ensures. its all fun and games until u realize this is what the fruits of a ton of plants will consistently look like if the bees die out

Okay but… what’s the problem?

I was wrong about Buttercup

Okay, so I just watched The Princess Bride again, and I had a new realization: I have always had an unfair hatred for Buttercup.
I’ve always thought of her as window dressing, but she has a surprising amount of agency in this movie.  Think about it:

The very first chance she gets to escape from Vizzini, Fezzik, and Inigo, she does it. She leaps into a sea full of SHRIEKING EELS.  Mind you, this is right after she tells them they will be hanged if they are caught.  Buttercup has no problem telling people off when they need it.

Then, she tells off the Dread Pirate Roberts the second she figures out who he is.  And then pushes him down a hill just because she can.

After their adventures in the fire swamp, she agrees to go with Humperdink to save Westley’s life with NO HESITATION WHATSOEVER.  Just because that is the only way she can save him.

And then is my favorite part: she tells Humperdink off.  She confronts him on his cowardice, knowing that he legally owns her at this point.  And she doesn’t care, because that fucker needs to know what she really thinks of him.

After Westley is seeming killed, and she is forced to marry Humperdink, she decides that killing herself is the only form of agency she has left.  And she’s fully prepared to do it.  Until Westley is there to remind her that she has perfect breasts (he’s got a point).

And then Westley gets all the points for understanding that this was not a consensual marriage for Buttercup.  “You didn’t say it, you didn’t do it.”  Can we get that on t-shirts?

Buttercup is not an action girl.  She’s not going to pick up a sword and start beating up on those that hurt her, but that’s not a reason to hate her.  Every chance she gets, she tries to be an equal partner in this relationship.  And, let’s be honest, this movie isn’t even about her.  The agency she has in this movie is really impressive.

This is important because we need a wide range of women in our media.  They can’t all be Xena Warrior Princess because that’s not what all women are like. But we need to appreciate the other types of women out there.  The ones who won’t fight or do anything that’s considered traditionally masculine, but still deserve respect anyway.

@klunkyboots

I am so sad that anyone ever hated Buttercup.

She’s merely presented in the role of window dressing and damsel in distress, but she almost never actually acts distressed. This kind of mirrors the movie’s overall tone. It intentionally presents itself as a sappy romance, but then it just kind of does whatever it wants.
